Once again, the South is blazing another track along the plains of Hip-Hop. These new riders adorn no masks to hide behind. They want the listener to know exactly what is going to hit them straight in the ear, with no remorse. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the arena…Most Valuable Playas.
A product of Lafayette-based Blu Chippaz Entertainment, the foursome brings to you “Mouthpiece.” Set to hit stores in March, the 19-track freshman effort possesses evident musical and lyrical talent. Do not confuse this promising group with other artists in the industry. “We focus more on our lyric side than the gimmick side of the industry,” says Otto Vital, a Southern University graduate and MVP member/executive producer. “We strive for a positive change (in our music style) even if it is in a twisted fashion.”
When you first pop “Mouthpiece” into your CD player, you are forewarned of the lyrical tactics that are about to be released to your audible receptors. With songs like “Pimp Change” and “MVP 200 Zone,” MVP let’s everyone know they are here to stay while on their paper chase to success and notoriety. The album has its share of slow-tempo beats while keeping a hard-hitting edge. This combination proves to be successful on the tracks “In My Heart” and “Rollin’ With My Homies.” These two tracks are odes to true friendship and the encouragement to keep one’s head up in times of strife.
The standout on the album is “Ghetto” featuring Bun B of the well-known rap duo UGK. Already heavily requested on stations such as 95.5 FM (Lafayette), “Ghetto,” along with the rest of the album, takes listeners on the MVP roller coaster ride through the world of being “ghetto” but oh so fabulous with no apparent stops.
