BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Key factors in the Jaguars victories, both Friday and Saturday’s SWAC Championship games, were the Bullocks … Tammy and Angela.
“Angie was by far the X-factor … and Tammy just showed up at the right time. All season we just kind of sat back and let Tammy play her game, she is a very humble kid” said Coach Sandy Pugh. “And Angie … I knew Angie was going to play her game.”
The Bullocks, who are not related, played their best games of the season in the last two games of the season.
Tammy Bullock, an all-tournament selection had a season best 14 points in Saturday’s game.
“Tammy showed up at the right time,” forward Tremesha Colbert said. “We have always known what she is capable of doing. Nobody had to tell her anything.”
Junior guard Angela Bullock finished the game with 11 points and four rebounds.
“Angie did some incredible things. Offensively and defensively, she made great plays. She took a lot of stress off us when point guard Tommie Walden went down with an injury to her elbow.”
“Coach told us the big girl (Crystal Kitt) couldn’t hold both of us,” said Tammy Bullock.
“I know Angie’s going to play her game,” Guard Jacklyn Winfield said. “She’s going to crash the boards and drive around the big girls. She jumps over them. Nobody can hang with her when she’s playing like that.”
Winfield, the tournament’s most valuable player again proved herself to be a detrimental part the Jaguar’s winning equation.
“Jackie is a player … she is a smart player, she is small and tough to guard,” said Freeman-Jackson. “She also knows how to trust her team and pass the ball.”
Tremesha Colbert, one of the three holdovers from the Jaguars less stellar days, was also instrumental in helping the Jaguars to victory.
“Coming into the season, I knew what my role was … to rebound,” said Colbert. “I just have knack for knowing how and when the ball is going to come off the rim.”
“When I first got her, we didn’t have a winning philosophy … my sophomore year was completely different.”
“Southern is very good, very athletic, very talented as a team,” said Jackson State University Head Coach Denise Taylor. The Jaguars defeated Jackson State, Friday afternoon in the semi-finals.
“All of my girls are just incredible,” said Pugh. “These kids, if I give them a game plan, they can do it. It was a collective defensive effort, through and through.”
“They are just wonderful.”
