The Smith-Brown Memorial Union Cotillion Ballroom was packed shoulder to shoulder as students participated in Career Exploration Day on Wednesday, February 27, 2002.
“This week has just been awesome,” said Director of Career Services Al Barron.
Barron explained that the faculty, the local radio stations and the Digest all played a role in getting the word out about career day.
There were various companies present at the job fair ranging from finance companies to law enforcement.
“We are here looking for students for our summer program who are graduating in the fall of 2002 or spring of 2003,” said Robert McMeans of Boeing.
Students were eager to explore possible career opportunities available to them. .
“Basically I am looking for intern and co-op opportunities in marketing,” said Kashaunda Dunn, a junior marketing major.
Four prestigious companies that were present at the fair were General Motors, Boeing, Procter & Gamble and International Paper Finance.
“We are really looking for mechanical engineering majors to fill a full time position possessing a 2.8 GPA expecting to graduate in May with experience in a manufacturing environment,” said Simeon Lewis of GM.
Proctor & Gamble’s Norman Phillips said he was trying to get a few permanent positions for the fall and winter session.
Although many students were in attendance, some lacked professionalism.
“A lot of the students are lacking communication skills, proper appearance, and the ability to sell themselves,” said Sam Randolph of International Paper Finance Randolph.
Randolph explained that when a student doesn’t meet the criteria of a company it is extremely important that he or she be able to explain why and be able to give the particular company something to take into consideration.
