Once again a Southwestern Athletic Conference team failed to make a splash in the big pool that is the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Southern University women’s basketball team (26-5) traveled to Boulder, Colo.,as the 2002 SWAC basketball champions hoping to give the SWAC their first NCAA tournament win in 11 appearances.
But that was not to be as the Jaguars were defeated 88-61 by a taller, more experienced team, the Lady Buffaloes of the University of Colorado (22-9).
“Colorado was the best team we have ever played,” said Southern head coach Sandy Pugh.
The Jaguars got off to a rocky start as they allowed the Lady Buffs to jump out to a nine-point lead, before ending the half down by 20.
“The first five minutes of any game is crucial … and we just couldn’t get anything going,” said Pugh.
Meanwhile Colorado used their great speed and huge height advantage over the Jaguars, who used their tallest player, Tammy Bullock, who is only six-feet-one-inches tall, to block shots and grab 41 rebounds.
Leading the Jaguars in their hard fought defeat were Jacklyn Winfield with 25 points and Angela Bullock with 13 points and nine rebounds.
Bullock, who had been an integral factor in the Jaguars’ quest for the SWAC title, was sidelined due to foul trouble, finished the game with only two points.
“We couldn’t get Tammy going,” Pugh said.
Britt Hartshorn led the Lady Buffaloes with 15 points, Mandy Nightingale added 13 and six assists to Colorado’s winning equation.
Down 41-21 at the half,,the Jaguars did manage to make some noise during the second half coming within 16 points of the Lady Buffs’ lead.
But, when the clocked ticked down to zero it was the Lady Buffs moving on to the second round of the NCAA tournament, to take on the Lady Tigers of Louisiana State University.
“We played a good game,” said Angela Bullock.
