In the Davey L. Whitney Complex, in Lorman, Miss. the Braves of Alcorn State University captured their third regular-season Southwestern Athletic Conference title, by defeating the Southern University Jaguars 87-73, Saturday, February 23.
“We probably played as well as we could,” Southern head coach Jobe said. “They have more talent and depth than anybody in the conference.”
The Jaguars were led in their second-straight loss, by last week’s player of the week, Nicholas Egland and point guard Trayvean Scott.
Egland racked up 17 points, grabbing six rebounds, while Scott garnered 13 points and five assists.
The Braves were led, by guard Jeff Cammon, with 19 points and eight assists and Lee Cook with 17 points and six rebounds.
“We’re still improving. We played especially well in the first half. And then we got close in the second half,” said Jobe.
The Braves, who are not known for being a three-point shooting team, went 10-18 from three-point land.
“All the scouting reports say they don’t shoot 3s,” Jobe said. “Tonight, everybody was shooting 3s … We thought if we could hold them down on the inside, we didn’t have to worry so much about the outside. But, no, they were just as potent outside.”
The Jaguars did manage to cut Alcorn’s lead down to four points, with back-to-back layups, by Victor Tarver, who finished the game with 11 points and six assists.
Alcorn took their biggest lead of the game, with less three minutes left to play, score Jaguars 63, Braves 84.
“They went back to their inside game,” Jobe said. “Then as we were trying to hold them down on the inside, their inside game came in to play again.”
The Jaguars kept the Braves to only three points, before closing the contest, Jaguars 73, Braves 87.
Southern, who is still looking to secure the eighth place spot, in the SWAC, will take on Texas Southern University, Saturday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m., in Seymour Gymnasium.
