According to the Southern University’s Registrar’s Office, students will no longer receive their grades in the mail.
In a press release dated Nov. 29, Registrar Brenda Williams announced Southern would no longer send the traditional paper report cards through the mail. From now on, students would only be able to access their grades through JAGCALL, the university’s automated phone system, or JAGNET, Southern’s online system.
“We’re going through the Internet because students will be able to access their grades sooner than with snail mail,” said Williams. “Besides, the students pay a technology fee and we are just giving them their money’s worth.
“With the fall 2004 implementation of electronic grading, students have immediate access to their grades via JAGNET and or JAGCALL,” she said. “Versus waiting three to five days after the semester ends to receive them in the mail.”
Ebony Baylor, a sophomore political science major from Shreveport supports the registrar’s decisions to go paperless.
“When it comes to grades, you can look at them online quicker than through the mail. It’ll be more efficient-as long as they can get JAGNET to stay up and working.”
Unlike Baylor and Williams, some students do not have faith in the system’s Internet services.
“I believe it’s a good idea,” said Terrel Kent, a junior music education major from Baton Rouge. “But they also need a traditional paper copy in case there is a discrepancy between the student’s grade and the grade posted on the Internet. The school should have the grades posted and mailed for security purposes.”
Jamal Marshall, a sophomore Miami resident majoring in biology does not think either JAGNET or JAGCALL is equipped to be the sole source for student’s grades.
“I feel that the system is ridiculous. JAGNET is not up and running when I need it. They are inconsistent with their operating times.”
According to the press release, students will be able to access their grades on JAGNET from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., beginning Dec. 14. The Web site will not be available again until Dec. 19, when the site will resume the usual hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
