The Southern University Officeof Facilities Planning and Shaw Construction Company have completed 20 percentof Phase 2 of the building project on Lee-Hines Field, the SU baseball stadium.
Phase 2 of the three-stageproject of construction to the baseball stadium consists of restrooms and aconcession stand projected to be finished by May 30.
The cement ground slab andplumbing are in place for the 430 square feet on the women’s side containingseven toilets and four sinks. In the men’s area there will be 380 square feetwith four toilets, three urinals and three sinks. Adjacent to the restrooms is the 760-square foot canopycovering the walk to the storage room and concession stands. The next step in the project is theconstruction of concrete block walls.
Phase 1, which included buildingthe stadium and bleachers, was completed in April 2003.
Phase 3, the final project, willinclude locker rooms and coaches’ offices which will be constructed inapproximately 16 months according to Endas Vincent, SU system director ofFacilities Planning.
Ground was broken late last yearto build the concession stand and restroom facilities behind the bleachers atthe entrance of the stadium.
The cost of the project isestimated at $346,500.
“We are seeking to provide aprogram and facility that the players and fans can be proud of,” said SUbaseball head coach Roger Cador.
According to Cador, the goal ofthe new facility is to give outsiders and students the opportunity to seeSouthern University Athletics as more than just football.
Phase 2 is a project of thestate, the mayor of Baton Rouge, SU Offices of Facilities Planning and Control,and architect William L. McElroy, an SU graduate.
Cador, Southern ChancellorEdward Jackson and university President Leon Tarver also support this effort.
