FredriekaLewis, the 6’4” center for the Southern University Jaguars women’s basketballteam is in the process of applying for a medical red-shirt.
She had aknee injury, then later sustained a badly sprained left ankle due to a bad fallat practice. Lewis had been outsince early December 2004. She wasstated to be out for four to six weeks.
“We needher, we would love to have her,” said Southern assistant coach Danny Evans. “Wewould love to have her play at full strength. But she just really wasn’t at full strength and that was thebest for her not to come back; she’s missed so many games now to have her to try and come back.”
Before theinjury, Lewis averaged 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
The Jaguarswas picked to finish in first place in the preseason Southwestern Athletic Conferencepolls.
Since herarrival to the Jaguars team the sophomore wasn’t accustomed to watching herteammates from the bench. Lewisaveraged 11.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season.
TheBeaumont, Texas native was named 2004 Southwestern Athletic Conference Freshmanof the Year last season.
