The heatingsystem in Horace Greely White Hall told its age Monday, when old pipes burstdue to the boiling system, leaving several inches of water and damage in thedormitory.
“We haveexperienced pipes that burst all over campus and some of it is due to the factthat there are cold temperatures and we are trying to heat the rooms andprovide heat to the building and some of it is due to the age of the building,”said Director of Residential Housing Marilyn Hill.
White Hall, currently an all male dorm, was established in the late 1940s and is one of theoldest dorms actively standing at Southern University.
MillerThomas, a junior from Clinton majoring in fine arts, was in his dorm room whenwater fell from his ceiling.
“I was onthe phone lying down and all of a sudden water rushed down from the ceilingonto the floor,” Thomas said.
This wasthe second time this semester a pipe exploded and caused water damage to WhiteHall. Different rooms experienced damage in both of the floods.
“I reallyfeel it (the heating system) needs to be replaced. This is the first time ithappened to me,” said Delmonta Bellard a junior from Lake Charles majoring incriminal justice. “My Playstation 2 is wet and I am afraid to plug it in.”
Compensationfor all lost or damaged items will be given once a report is filled with theinsurance company and the Office of Risk Management, and they will replace orreimburse the students.
On Tuesday, new flex hoses were installed in rooms. This should rectify a heatingproblem. The approximate cost toinstall these new hoses is $1,750.
“We had theproblem in Reed Hall several years ago, but we replaced and updated the hosesthree years ago,” Hill said.
