The entertainment line-up for Southern University’s 2005 Homecoming events are stockpiled with musical guests and comedians that will be hard to forget.
The homecoming concert, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. in A.W. Mumford Stadium will open with Southern’s own Keith Jacobs, a member of Hall-A-Fame records.
Bobby Valentino, a graduate of Clark Atlanta University with a degree in Mass Communications is also on the roster.
Signed on the Def Jam record label via Disturbing Tha Peace, Valentino’s smooth voice over tracks like “Slow Down” and “Tell Me” has placed him on heavy rotation.
Back in 1996, Valentino was part of a group called Mista which had a hit entitled “Blackberry Molasses.”
Hailing from Houston is newcomer to the majors Slim Thug.
With his debut album titled Already Platinum, Slim Thug blasted onto the airwaves with such hits as “Boyz N Blue,” “3 Kings,” and “Like A Boss.”
Already a pro with three independent albums under his belt, Slim Thug will be a performance to watch.
Trillville, an Atlanta based group known for being ‘crunk’ will also hit the stage. Releasing their album in the fall, Reloaded Don P., Dirty Mouth and Lil La (Atlanta), have brought irresistible songs like “Some Cut,” “Neva Eva,” “Get Some Crunk” and ” Stay Low” to the air waves. They have also collaborated with Lil Jon.
The headlining act for the night will go to David Banner, former SGA president at Southern University.
“I am very excited that Banner is coming, ” said SGA president Justin McCorkle. “We didn’t have any backlash from the administration.”
Popular from songs such as “Like A Pimp” and “Cadillac on 22’s,” Banner first got the attention of listeners in 2003 with his debut album, Mississippi: The Album.
Now, which the popular hit “Play” off his recent release “Certified,” students cannot wait to see a performance by Banner.
The comedy show, which will be held in A.W. Mumford Stadium at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night, is sure to have even the most serious person rolling on the floor with laughter.
Calling himself the “African King of Comedy,” comedian Michael Blackson has been making audiences laugh since the early 1990’s.
Discovered in Philadelphia, Blackson went on to act in Ice Cube’s Next Friday trilogy and appeared in an array of shows like HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, BETs Comic View and P. Diddy’s Bad Boy Tour of Comedy.
Rob Stapleton, who has appeared on BETs Comic View, It’s Showtime at the Apollo and Def Comedy Jam has had audiences laughing in the isles with his trademark routines-your paycheck is hiding in the mailbox and rappers who scare you into liking their music. Highly requested at colleges and universities, Stapleton is a doctor of comedy who specializes in humor.
Detroit native dubbed “the comedians-comedian”, Tony Roberts brings a refreshing and hilarious medium to the stage. +Being featured on shows like BETs Comic View, Def Comedy Jam, and It’s Showtime at the Apollo, makes many wonder how Southern was so lucky to have all this wonderful talent for Homecoming.
