The schedule of the Southern University volleyball team has been conflicted again, this time due to Hurricane Rita and her landfall on the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.
Previously, Hurricane Katrina prevented the women from traveling east.
The Prairie View A&M University volleyball team was scheduled to host Southern Thursday. The Lady Jaguars were also scheduled to play the Texas Southern University on Sept. 23, the day before Rita’s landfall.
“Due to – Hurricane Rita we have decided to postpone all of our upcoming athletic events for this week,” said PVAMU athletic director Charles McClelland. “Ensuring the safety of our student-athletes, fans, supporters and the participating schools is our main concern.”
Hurricane Katrina’s effect on the city of New Orleans caused the University of New Orleans volleyball team to cancel their season. Southern was scheduled to compete against UNO on September 20. The Lady Jaguars had not played since traveling to Alcorn State University on September 14, where they defeated the Lady Braves 3-1.
“Well, we can’t mess with Mother Nature,” said Lady Jaguars’ head coach Nathaniel Denu. “We are going to take this time and improve on some things and work on other things.”
The Southern (6-3, 1-0) are scheduled to travel to Jackson, Miss. to play Jackson State University (1-10, 0-0) at 7 p.m., for their first game in 13 days.
Lady Jaguars’ soccer was also postpones because of Rita. This was the second time this season Southern was supposed to have played Alcorn State. Katrina also affected their first scheduled game. The match, which was supposed to have been played on Sept. 23 and 24, will be rescheduled.
The Jags’ football team game against Albany State — a non-conference game — was scheduled for Sept. 24 and was prematurely rescheduled to Sept. 25, but was ultimately cancelled.
