After eight attempts, the Southern University Lady Jaguars soccer team earned the first win of the season when they defeated the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University.
“We’re getting better with each game,” said interim head coach John Knighten. “We made some adjustments from Friday’s game and that made the difference.”
The Lady Jaguars (1-8, 1-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) had previously lost its eighth straight game to Prairie View A&M 2-1 at Clark Park in Baker Friday.
Freshman forward Merdlyn Matthews scored her fourth goal of the season when she tied the game 1-1 in their first overtime of the season.
Matthews also scored in the first four minutes of the game against Prairie View A&M. Freshman midfielder Charmaine Jones connected on her second goal of the year when she scored the game-winning field goal.
“Whenever I play, I never give up,” Jones said. “I enjoy playing soccer and I have always been a competitor.”
In the game against the Lady Panthers, Southern junior midfielder Nicole Joseph started the game as a goalie for injured junior goalie Ashley Stevenson. Joseph recorded four saves but allowed one goal before the half that allowed Prairie View A&M to tie.
The Lady Jaguars still have an opportunity to compete for the divisional title.
On Friday, SWAC officials informed them that all games against SWAC opponents will count as such, but their western divisional record will determine who will attend the postseason tournament.
The Lady Jaguars will be traveling to face the current SWAC champions, the Grambling State Lady Tigers on Friday at 4 p.m. Then they will go on to Pine Bluff, Ark. and take on the Golden Lionesses of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sunday at 1 p.m.
