In their first tournament of the season, the Southern University men’s golf team picked up a win at Grambling State on Oct. 5, defeating Alabama State 304-306.
The Grambling State tourney included all of the teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, except for Jackson State.
The Jaguars were down by three strokes after the first day, they then won by two shots on the last day.
“The team is a whole lot better,” said senior Wayne Birch, team captain. “We’ve been practicing; we’re looking at our swings on tape and seeing what we look like. We’re practicing with a purpose instead of just practicing.”
The win puts the Jaguars on a good foot. They suffered a losing season last year and recorded not one tournament win.
“We’re practicing daily,” said Willie Williams, head men’s golf coach. “We’re going to have a pretty good team this year. We’ve been going up to St. Francisville to practice at The Bluffs and The Island, because they are tougher and they will have our players ready to play anywhere.”
Williams also added two freshmen and a transfer student to the team with veterans Birch and senior Lee Njoroge.
“Coach (Williams) did a little recruiting,” Birch said. “We have a whole new team this year.
The Jaguars next tournament is scheduled for Oct. 17-19, at Alabama State in Montgomery, Ala.
