Warner Bros. artist Tango Redd’s first visit to Southern was a bittersweet one. He said he was excited to perform his new single “Let’s Cheat,” before thousands at Southern’s annual homecoming concert on Oct. 6.
However, the realization that he was in a city among displaced Gulf Coast residents put things in perspective.
“I’m just blessed to be here,” he said.
The Atlanta-born rapper said playing before the masses of Southernites was an experience. The feelings of concert attendees seemed to be mutual while he rapped his slow-tempo song featuring R&B crooner Lloyd.
“I’m definitely excited to be performing at Southern University,” Redd said. “I mean just last year, I was just looking at this place on TV and now I’m here.”
The 19-year-old said he has worked with nationally known rap groups Three Six Mafia and Trillville. He has also worked with The Dungeon Family’s Sleepy Brown, rapper-producer David Banner and rapper Bone Crusher on his upcoming album “The Campaign.”
The album is expected to drop sometime next year.
“My major influence when I rap is the women, I’m not gon’ lie,” Redd said. “Because I get my inspiration from things that are heavily influential in my life on a everyday basis. Like most men, women are one of those things.”
The artist said his future goals are to pursue acting and establish a record label. He said he plans to call his label “Magnum Entertainment” and will be up and running soon.
Tango said he is now happy to join the people and alumni who can relate to the historically black college experience. He said HBCUs would also be able to experience his philanthropic side once he gains notoriety in the music world.
“Historically black colleges make the world go round and they’ve come so far and made it possible for us to get an education,” Redd said.
“A lot of that is because of entertainers like Steve Harvey, David Banner and Lynn Whitfield. When I start making the big money, I’m definitely investing in the HBCUs of this country. You can believe that.”
