The Southern University bowling team defeated Texas Southern University for its first victory of the season 4,499-4,279 pins in Houston last week.
“Going into the match, we were cautiously optimistic,” said Head Coach Karen Couvillon.
The current Southwestern Athletic Conference champions held the Lady Jaguars down in the first two games, but could not stop them in the last game of singles, when the Lady Jaguars bowled 896-810 over the Lady Tigers.
“We have a strong team this year, probably my strongest ever, but we know TSU is also a strong team,” Couvillon said. “So to come home with a win is very, very exciting and comfortable.”
The Lady Jaguars then opened a 2,538 to 2,476 lead.
Playing in a doubles game, sophomore Melissa Bryant and senior Erin Williams knocked over 1,010 pins, while the Lady Tigers top team rolled 999.
The Lady Jaguars junior Yolanda Simmons and freshmen Keosha Moore rolled over 1,012 pins, but the Southern’s top team — sophomore Deneesha Foster and sophomore Casey Lofthouse — rolled 1,124 pins to give Southern a 187 pin lead.
Bryant was also the most valuable player for this match with 1,072 pins.
“I’m really confident with my team this year. It’s just amazing how good we are this year,” Bryant said. “We feel that if we could beat TSU, we can beat any team.”
Couvillon said this year’s team is very strong.
“I’m very encouraged, very hopeful that we will make it to the nationals,” Couvillon said. “We only missed it by one spot and that was with an all-freshman team. They are still with us now and still putting forth the effort to improve even further.”
The Lady Jaguars will have their second match against Louisiana Tech today at 4 p.m. in Jonesboro, Ark. and will also participate in the Lady Indians Classic tournament starting Oct. 29.
“We are going in feeling really good about this weekend,” Bryant said.
