The world-renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater junior dance company, Ailey II, will make a visit to the Baton Rouge River Center Theatre for the Performing Arts on Sunday, as part of a 41-city national tour. The performance is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Ailey II started in 1974 as the Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble to help talented dance students make a successful transition onto the stage.
“You’re going to see a diverse program,” said Marcus Willis, a second-year dancer from Houston. At 16, Willis moved to New York City to study at The Ailey School. “We’re going to do a ballet called “Intimate Voices” by Igal Perry, who’s very popular in New York City.
“There’s another ballet called “Nahum” choreographed by Camille (A. Brown),” Willis said. “It’s very spiritually oriented. It’s like nonstop dancing.”
According to a press release by the dance theater, “Revelations,” a signature performance designed by Ailey himself, will conclude the night’s showing.
“It’s defiantly a family performance,” said Megan Fortunato, Ailey II spokesperson.
Those interested in attending the performance should call (225) 766-8379 for tickets, which are $28.
