After graduating from Southern, most alumni only return for Homecoming.
But for Terrance “T-Boyd” Boyd, coming back to Southern means filming a music video.
On Friday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Boyd will be on location on The Bluff to film the video for the first single off his debut album, “Smart Decisions.” Ricky Armelin, a senior mass communication major from Lake Charles, will make his debut as cameraman.
Boyd said the album tells listeners hustling is not limited to just illegal activity. Meaning there are other decisions in life other than selling dope or being a gangster Boyd said.
Other songs on the album include ‘Slow Dance,’ ‘Who Dat’ and ‘What’s Ya Name.’ “Decisions” is expected to release in the spring of 2006.
‘On My Toez,’ Boyd’s first single, is a club groove that has already impressed its preliminary listeners. The video for “Toez” will be shot behind the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, sponsored in part by the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
On Saturday, Boyd will wrap up his video at Baton Rouge’s Club Elite, located on 7380 Tom Drive.
“On My Toez’ is just a performance video,” Boyd said of his concept for the video. “It’s just going to show love to the campus and to those who’ve gotten me this far.
“Then we’re going to go to the (Kappa Alpha Psi) frat lot and have a party-type atmosphere.”
Boyd, along with Davario Stevenson, president of the Alpha Sigma chapter, are extending invitations to all Greek organizations and students to join them for the video shoot.
“We’re really excited Terrance is coming back to do the video,” Stevenson said. “It’s rare that Southern is portrayed in a positive light in the media.”
A native of Kansas City, Mo., Boyd didn’t get interested in rapping until 2003 when he started to appear on various mix tapes in Baton Rouge. In 2004, Boyd created Sewed Up Entertainment, along with partner Kivoli Thomas. He credits his degree in mass communication from Southern for assisting him in learning the business.
“Once I discovered I could rap, I did my homework,” Boyd said. “I was able to incorporate my business skills with my rapping.”
