Eddie Robinson, the man who spent 56 years making Grambling State a household name, finally has house named after him now that the Eddie Robinson Museum is open.
Coach Rob was honored during the museum’s official opening on Nov. 11.
The Eddie Robinson Museum Inaugural Banquet was dedicated to Robinson and his many achievements as the head coach of the GSU football team.
Many people turned out from the Grambling community as well as former players and coaches that played for and worked with Coach Rob and paid tribute.
“I certainly hope that it will bring the people to a greater awareness of the treasure that we have here in Grambling in Coach Robinson,” said Douglas Porter, a former assistant coach at Grambling in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
“Because he’s been here so long, and is such a constant presence, people might have taken him for granted,” Porter said.
“But anybody, like me, who has been away from Grambling learns very quickly about his mystique around the rest of the country. It’s great to recognize him at home. It’s long overdue.”
The exhibit, which is loaded with memorabilia and artifacts from Robinson’s tenure from the collection of Grambling State University, is a small token of appreciation on behalf of the Grambling State family to coach Rob for his achievements as head coach of the GSU football team.
On display are conference champion trophies that span from 1955 — Grambling’s last undefeated season — to 1989.
Of special note in this exhibit are game summaries from the 1990s, a number of coach of the year awards and a colorful collage of football programs.
There is also a special display devoted to Doug Williams, Robinson’s most celebrated pupil and his eventual successor at the GSU helm.
