The Jaguar women’s basketball team opened up their season with two straight victories over the Northwestern State University Lady Demons 67-56 and Nicholls State University 85-67.
“The games versus Northwestern and Nicholls were good for all schools and Louisiana,” said head coach Sandy Pugh. “I’m glad we were able to come out with two straight victories.”
The Jaguars next challenge was the match up between cross-town rivals.
The Jaguars started off strong jumping out to a 4-0 lead, which became their only lead of the game before the No. 3 Louisiana State University Lady Tigers took control and went on to win 107-39. This is the first time that an opponent has scored in the triple digits versus a Sandy Pugh team in the six years she has been coaching at Southern. Senior guard Rolanda Monroe recorded 11 points, two rebounds and one steal.
“We just couldn’t match up with them,” Pugh said. “They exploited our weakness, which is the point guard position, by keeping an aggressive defense on us all night.”
Coach Pugh now moves to only three victories away from her one hundredth victory of her career at SU.
Their next five non-conference games will be on the road, after the Thanksgiving break. They will prepare for the East Carolina tournament to be held on Dec. 3 and 4. The next time the Jaguars play at home will be Jan. 7 when they host the Grambling State University Lady Tigers.
