After gripes and complaints from the ladies of Booker T. WashingtonHall about insufficient parking area, a new parking lot was created to easetheir worries.
“The young ladies from Washington Hall ran to the (StudentGovernment Association) office one day because the police were towing theircars,” Monroe said. “The problem was there really was no parking space for themto park.”
The complaints began in fall 2004, but the new parking areawas in place for spring 2005.
With the aid of the police station, the ticketing and towingwas taken care of but the real issue remained unresolved.
“The issue was we didn’t want it to happen again. One of theobvious solutions was to create a parking area for the girls in WashingtonHall,” Monroe said.
Approximately $10,000 was used to create the parking lotbehind Mary McLeod Bethune Hall. According to Monroe, the money came fromtickets and towing.
Monroe worked in conjunction with the chancellor’s office, police department, building and grounds, and student affairs.
Tiffany Burrell, a resident assistant in Washington Hall isvery appreciative of the new parking.
”We only had one strip of parking which was behind thedorm,” Burrell said. “We were suppose to be able to park in Bethune’s parkinglot but sometimes they would tow us.” According to Burrell, there are about 105women who live in Washington Hall, but the old parking lot only held about15-20 vehicles.
“The new parking lot allows us to not have to worry aboutour cars being towed while we’re in class. I’m glad they decided to dosomething about it,” Burrell said.
Though the new parking idea came into plan from the ladiesin Washington Hall, the parking is for both Washington and Bethune residencehalls.
“I felt it was a good thing. We have insufficient parkingfor our students,” said Shaya Holmes, a resident assistant in Bethune Hall.”They were talking about us parking all the way at Bradford (male dormitory)and walking to our dorms and that wasn’t safe.” Holmes is satisfied with thenew adjustments.
“I’m glad they did it, and I’m glad they listened.”
Monroe said he is now focusing on the parking for the backof campus.
“We really need students in the back of campus to reallystart speaking out. If there’s any problems on campus call your SGA president,”Monroe said. “We’ll do what we can to alleviate the problem.”
