It was a dayof practicing in Seymour Gymnasium for the Southern University Lady Jaguarssoftball team on Wednesday because of the rain.
The LadyJaguars were working on passing drills with the team’s new softballs. Theseason opener is scheduled on Friday, Feb. 11-13 at the Southeastern LionsTournament in Hammond.
“The girlsare ready, your talking about a whole semester of no play and weeks ofpracticing our girls are ready right now,” said Southern head coach NancyMarshall. “The veterans are moreso excited because they know what they have to fight for.”
Southern waschosen to finish first in the Southwestern Athletic Conference -WesternDivision.
The LadyJaguars had two players named to the 2005 All-SWAC preseason team — juniorJamila Taylor was named Pitcher of the Year while Jayme Roberts also a junior,received All-SWAC honors.
“In ourscrimmage against Louisiana College we saw some things that we can do as ateam,” Marshall said. ” Ourdefense is stronger than it’s ever been, our bats are coming around and we’re hittingbetter than we thought we would at this time in the season.”
The firsthome game for the Lady Jaguars is on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Nicholls StateUniversity set for 2 p.m. at Lady Jaguar Field.
