The SouthernUniversity softball team finished their weekend tournament second in the 2005Louisiana State University Tiger Classic.
In Saturday’saction the Lady Jaguars defeated the Lady Tigers of Grambling State Universityfor the second time this season 13-0.
Southerndefeated Indiana 6-0 to advance in the championship round where the LadyJaguars faced LSU.
Pitcher JamilaTaylor picked up her first shutout victory in the tournament. Shortstop Brittany Richardson scored tworuns and batted in 1 RBI. Centerfield Brittany Jefferson hit in 2 RBI’s and scored two runs.
The teamtotaled 12 RBI’s in the game for their third shutout of the year. Catcher Tranessa Zepherin hit her firstcareer homerun when the hit the ball over the left field wall for a grand slamto lead SU in the win.
In the nextgame Southern challenged tournament host LSU, but poor hitting and two errorsproved costly for the Lady Jaguars as they picked up their second loss of thetournament 0-8. Centerfield manSamisha Bledsoe recorded a single for the only hit for SU in the game.
Southern fellto ninth-ranked LSU (6-1) in the championship round 9-0.
“In the firstgame we went hitless because we didn’t know anything about them,” said Southernhead coach Nancy Marshall. “Thistime we wanted to just hit the ball and their pitcher put the ball where wecould hit it.
LSU is a goodhitting team there is no doubt about that. When we were trying to do our best by bringing differentpitches in, but they still jumped on it. We will focus on hitting for the week leading up to Southeastern.”
Southern willbe in action again on Saturday at 1p.m. at Lady Jaguars Field againstSoutheastern Louisiana University.
