The Southern University intramuralwomen’s flag football team won the 2004-2005 ACIC National Flag FootballChampionship.
The championships were held at theUniversity of New Orleans. The events were hosted by the Recreation andIntramural Department for the 26th year.
Southern’s Redemption women teamwent undefeated in the tournament. There were 27 women teams from acrossthe country. Teams from Mexico also competed.
Redemption defeated CentralFlorida 48-0, Universidad De Cuautitlan, Mexico 67-2, Western Kentucky 38-0 andCampbell University 26-6.
This was the first time Southernladies had ever defeated a team from Mexico.
In the semifinals, Redemption wasup against powerful and former national champions Instituto PolitecuicoNational of Mexico City. This team had sent Southern to defeat severaltimes in other nationals. In 2000, SU lost to this team in thechampionship game, finishing as national runner-ups.
Southern took a 13-0 half timelead. Mexico closed to 13-6. SU scored again and went on to win19-6 to advance to the finals.
In the championship game, Southernscored two first half touchdowns for a 13-0 lead over Sam Houston State.
After SHS scored, the Jaguarladies sealed the victory with one last touchdown. Southern won its firstnational championship with a 19-6 victory Southern will be ranked number one inthe Louisiana, the nation and the world. Southern’s ladies have wonthe state championship for the last 10 years, making them the only Louisianauniversity intramural team to win this number.
Southern’s quarterback, AlisiaCardoza, passed for 15 touchdowns and rushed for five for the tournament. Quina Renee Bell had seven receptions and rushed for three touchdowns. Sheree Cunningham had four touchdown receptions, rushed for three and passedfor one.
Cunningham also had fiveinterceptions, returned two for touchdowns. Other ladies who scored wereDeQuita Johnson with four, Jamillah Washington and Tasha Vallair captured two apiece and Jovita Noble recorded one.

Southern’s Bell was votedTournament MVP. Cardoza was selected First Team All-American Offense. Cunningham, Arneshia Briscoe and Crystal Offery were selected to the First TeamAll-American Defense.
Southern men’s team finished inthird place with a 4-2 tournament record.
Quarterback Charles Jefferson wasvoted First Team All-American on offense. Jamone Smith and ArchilleJackson captured First Team All-American honors on defense. AssistantIntramural Director, Tyrone Tanner coached the men.
