The SouthernUniversity women’s basketball team defeated Alabama A&M 55-44 Monday nightin the F. G. Clark Activity Center.
This winhelped the Jaguars move to third place in the Southwestern Conference AthleticConference and the Lady Bulldogs (13-16, 7-6) to fourth.
“I thought wedid some good things executing,” said Southern women’s head coach Sandy Pugh.”The intensity and the effort was there but I just don’t think we are gettingit crisp as I’d like to see it. We didn’t do a good job in the second halfspotting up normally where we shoot from.”
Southerndominated the entire game, leading by as much as 18 points.
With only 39seconds left in the game Alabama A&M’s Rebecca Barnes made a layup bringingthe score within 51-41. ThenSouthern’s Megan Berard scored a three point shot to give the Jaguars a 54-41lead. Alabama A&M’s TamishaAugustin positioned to make a three point shot, but missed with 21.4 secondsleft to play.
AlabamaA&M’s Tamisha Augustin was fouled by Southern’s TaRhonda White. Augustin made only one of her freethrows to bring the score to 54-42 with 21 seconds to play. On the inbounds pass the Jag’s TiffanyJones was trapped by Tamisha Augustin and Ashleonte’ Samuel and was sent to theline to boost the Jaguars last score to 55-42. Although Alabama A&M’s Felicia Drummond made a layup inthe last seconds of the game, it wasn’t enough for a win.
“It’s toughplaying on the road. In thisleague a lot of teams play a whole lot tougher when they are at home and thatshowed tonight,” said Alabama A&M head coach Altherias Warmly. “Southern did a great job going totheir strengths, who we all know is Rolanda, she does a great job for the teamand she came through.”
The Jaguarsled 27-21 at the half.
Jaguars’junior guard, Rolanda Monroe led Southern with 23 points.
“I was justexecuting the offense, doing what Coach asked me to do and I tried to get myteammates involved — we came out with a great victory,” Monroe said.
On Saturday,Southern defeated Alabama State University 64-62.
The Jaguars(12-12, 8-6 SWAC) next home game is scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 5:30p.m. Southern will host theSWAC leaders Alcorn State Braves (16-6, 11-3) in the F.G. Clark ActivityCenter.
