Southern University males mayfinally get a new resident hall in July of 2006, according to SU Director ofFacilities Planning Endas W. Vincent.
Vincent said the project, whichbegan a few months ago, is still on schedule and on budget.
“As much as I know, it’s goingto be a male residence hall,”said Marilyn Hill, director of residential housingat Southern. “It will replace residence halls Carroll, Clark, and Moore, theresident halls that we are going to demolish.”
Hill also said the new dorm willbe able to house 378 students, and it would include the same amenities as thetwo newer female dorms, Camille E. Shade Hall and Samuella V. Totty Hall.
The name for the new dorm hasyet to be decided.
“Normally you don’t get the nameof the facility until it is ready to be occupied,” Hill said.
Vincent added that the decisionfor the name of the new facility will be made by the chancellor the board.
The majority of the dormitorieson Southern’s campus have long been the subject of scrutiny, especially amongon-campus residents. The progression of new facilities is something thatstudents are applauding.
“I believe it’s long overdue,”said Desherick Williams, a junior from Lake Charles, and current resident ofMoore Hall.
“The current living conditionsare an embarrassment to modern day living standards.”
