SouthernUniversity students have been wondering about the construction of a newIntramural Sports Complex on campus.
Thoughconstruction was slated for this month, officials say they still do not knowwhen building will begin.
The $5.7million project has been being planned for almost twenty years and students’tuitions have been raised since 1992 to help fund the project.
“I believeabout $39 from every student per semester goes toward the building of thecomplex,”_ said Melvin Robinson, director of intramural sports.
The complexwill include two basketball courts, jogging lanes, an indoor swimming pool andthree racketball courts, each done in phases.
Beforeconstruction will begin, Baranco Hall, the last of the residence “triangle”once located where the complex will be, will be torn down. The other twodormitories were demolished in 2002.
With SeymourGym is currently the only indoor facility for intramural sports, and activitieshosted by the SU Laboratory School. However, it currently has a mold problem.
“We had ameeting about two weeks ago and the (Southern University) chancellor feels thatit needs to be fixed,” Robinson said.
Negotiationof the renovations is currently underway. Robinson hopes that, along with thenew construction, will provide more options for active students.
“On-campusstudents are having a problem finding places to exercise and play ball,” saidRobinson. “They are my first priority.”
