From winning in the primaries by more than 500 votes Sharika King held her lead and is now Miss Southern University.
“I would like to thank Southern for representing me to the fullest,” King said, referring to the 1,041 people that voted for her. “Through my campaign I have lost a lot of sleep, but I have also met a lot of new people.”
Spending $5,000 donated by sponsors on her “Play the King” campaign, King feels that prayer and dedication brought her to victory over Kendalyn Edwards (563).
In the primary election King was against seven other candidates and received 918 votes over Edwards’ 349.
Her platform, includes bringing the spirit back to SU with forums of encouragement, financial stability workshops, programs to help students make plans of success after SU, to juice up campus beautification and refinement, and to make the Up ‘Til Dawn project better than ever proved to win with voters.
To gain the support of those who were not on her side, she plans to work diligently in her position to prove that she is the best person for the job.
“It took a lot of hard work and dedication from our whole committee starting in October,” said her campaign manager, Roy Youngblood, a senior biology major from Baton Rouge.
“We succeeded with our positive attitudes and good spirits.”
Assisting with her duties as Miss Southern University will be Miss Sophomore Terrica Wilson, Miss Junior Ashley Ransom and Miss Senior Shaundreka Rhines.
“My first official act as Miss Southern University will be coordinating plans for the Up ‘Til Dawn project,” King said.
She recommends that any future candidates run a clean race and pray.
“I am excited the upcoming year will be a great one,” King said.
