Both alegislative and internal audit are being conducted surrounding SouthernUniversity band director Dr. Isaac Greggs.
“This wasreported by the media in Baton Rouge last week,” said SU Chancellor EdwardJackson. “Right now nothing isnew.”
Jacksonconfirmed the audit last week. Aformer employee reported Gregg’s management of band financial reports to theschool.
“It’s anongoing matter,” Jackson said. “Weought to know something about the end of the month.”
Greggscommented on the reason for the investigation as being rumored.
“It’s gossip,”Greggs said. “Its just gossip.”
By definition,audits are professional examination and verification of a company’s financialaccounting documents and supporting date for the purpose of rendering anopinion as to their fairness, consistency and conformity with generallyaccepted accounting principles. The purposes of these audits may bevaried.
A financialaudit verifies the validity and accuracy of the financial statements of apublic company, governmental agency or nonprofit organization. Audits areperformed due to questions or an issue that has been raised on the performanceof a specific departments or companies.
When thesubject of an audit being done on the band’s finances, a rumor surfaced aboutGreggs retiring.
“That’s gossiptoo,” Greggs said. “I’ll let youknow when.”
Greggs, a76-year-old Shreveport native many affectionately call “Doc,” was honoredearlier this year for his contributions and achievements over the years andnamed an ambassador of goodwill for the state of Louisiana at the Old StateCapitol.
Greggsreceived his bachelor’s degree in music from Southern, his master of musicdegree from Vander Cook College of Music, and a doctorate of music fromConservatorio Nacional de Musica, Liva Peru. He also studied at the Columbia Collegein Chicago.
He has led theacclaimed marching band of Southern University, “The Human Jukebox”, since1969, transforming the band into one of the greatest musical attractions in theworld.
They werespotlighted throughout the month of February at the Old State Capitol inrecognition of Black History Month. A15-minute special report on America’sBroadcasting Channel’s “Nightline” titled “The Human Jukebox” showcased theband under the direction of their legendary band director.
