Deion N. Dorsett, StudentGovernment Association presidential candidate, plans to put the “student” backin student government. Dorsett is a junior business economics major from BatonRouge.
“I believe that I am a qualifiedcandidate for SGA president because I have a wealth of experience in leadershiproles. My experiences and my openness to new ideas will allow me to lead thestudent body effectively,” he said.
Dorsett has been a part of organizations such as F.O.C.U.S. as apeer counselor/mentor, a junior usher at Church Point Ministries, president andsecretary of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Men’s Federation volunteer,McKinley High SGA treasurer, Sergeant Team Leader of the United States Army,Health Specialist for the Louisiana Army National Guard, SU ROTC cadet, and ajunior class senator.
“I will differ from the previousSGA presidents by choosing qualification over association when appointingcabinet and support personnel. I will only select the best and brightestapplicants to work for the student body,” Dorsett said. “I will use the pastplans implemented by former presidents that were successful and armed withthese tools and an open mind I will bridge the gap between the three SGAbranches.”

“Southern University is like abusiness and the students are its customers,” he said. “Without them we willnever see 125 more years of existence.”
Dorsett feels the ability tosucceed and exceed the expectations while under pressure is one the things thatset him apart from other candidates.
“Fighting in Operation EnduringFreedom forced me to be able to lead in the most frantic combat situations,”Dorsett said. “That type of pressure can’t be duplicated with practice or anytraining money could buy.”
Dorsett feels he possesscharacteristics of unselfishness, courage, uncompromising loyalty, and trueJaguar pride.
“I will lead with a courageous,unselfish nature. I utterly refuse to compromise the trust of the student bodyfor personal gain or to appease our administration,” he said. “I will workdiligently to meet the needs of all students.”

Going on my abilities andbeliefs
Going on my abilities andbeliefs (G.O.M.A.B.) is the message sent by Student Government Associationpresidential candidate Rodney Junior.
He is a junior criminal justicemajor from Independence and a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
“I possess the determination andambition needed to perform the duties of SGA President,” he said.
His platform is rebuildingbridges.
One thing he plans to achieve ifelected is getting the roads fixed and making adjustments to the meal plans.
“I have already started the ballrolling on certain projects to ensure completion while I am in office,” hesaid.
According to Junior he hasdetermination for the proper execution of any task set before him.
“The students and staff will seemore things completed while I am in office,” he said.

Let’s take the yard back
“Let’s takethe yard back” is the proclamation for Justin E. McCorkle, Student GovernmentAssociation presidential candidate. He is a junior political science major fromNew Orleans.
McCorkle hasbeen freshman class president, Junior Division Academy vice president,administrative assistant to SGA President Wayne Haydin, junior class president,a member of the Political Science Association, co-chair of the Lacumba IIICommittee and a member of the Student Alumni Association advisory committee.
McCorklefeels his ability to intermingle and work with so many personalities andlifestyles are personal characteristics that will attribute to the overallsuccess of the SGA and also his ability to multitask as well as delegateresponsibilities.
“Myuntireless commitment to SGA and to the university student body as well as mypast proven leadership here at Southern as well as on a national level” is whatmakes him a qualified candidate.
McCorklefeels he will differ from past presidents because he will prove to be a betterpresident than those in the past.
“I will be atrue advocate for the entire student body. I will not be afraid toprofessionally disagree with administration on any issue that would not be inthe best interest of the student body,” he said. “I also plan to increasecommunication with the student body and SGA.”
His platformis to improve SGA-student relations, increase in student programs andactivities on and off campus, increase SGA visibility in the community andaround campus, put initiatives started by past SGA administrations into action,unification of all branches of SGA, increased visibility of studentorganization on campus, continue the Lacumba III project, AdministrationAccountability Initiative, and increase student body participation in SGAactivities and initiatives.
McCorkle’sability to connect with the entire student body is what he feels sets him apartfrom other candidates.
“Over mytenure at Southern, I have built relationships with university administration.I feel these relationships are critical for necessary compromise,” he said.”These relationships will put, if elected, the student body in the bestposition for change.”
Alvin J. Woods
The Great Communicator…”Raisingthe Bar”
Alvin J.Woods III proclaims himself as the great communicator as he plans to raise thebar if elected as SGA president.
Woods is asenior mass communication major from Lake Charles.
“I believemy work ethic, people skills, and enthusiasm for Southern University can leadour institute of higher learning into one of the best years ever for aHistorically Black College or university,” he said.
Woods hasbeen senior class president, Men’s Federation secretary, junior classpresident, a member of the Southern Digest, Department of Student LifeJudiciary Committee (Student Representative), a member of the National Association of BlackJournalists and a Southern University Ambassador.
“Iunderstand that a president is meant to serve the people who elected him orher,” he said. “My devotion to service sets me apart from the othercandidates.”
Security isa top priority on Woods campaign agenda.
“We shouldall feel safe at our collegiate home,” he said. “With the support of theSouthern University Police Department and the Department of Student Life, Iwill implement Campus Leaders Against Crime.”
According toWoods, The C.L.A.C. will be comprised of on-campus students and off-campusstudents who will focus on the addition of security cameras and lights oncampus.
“Myaccessibility to the student body will differentiate myself from previous SGApresidents,” he said.
Woods’platform is to provide a campus radio station, Project: Technology and NetworkServices, Campus Leaders Against Crime (C.L.A.C.), Students Speak Up! JaguarBuddies (Community Service Project), “I’m Aware…” and Organizations RoundTable.
