BIRMINGHAM,Ala.- No. 1 seedAlcorn State advanced to the semifinals of the Southwestern Athletic Conferencewomen’s tournament with a 72-44 easy win over No. 8 seed Texas Southern at theBirmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena.
RasaanPowell scored 17 points to lead the Lady Braves (19-8) who will advance to faceNo. 5 Grambling State on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
TexasSouthern’s (5-23) loss sent them home with no chance for advancement in thetournament.
“Alcorn dideverything that they needed to do to prove why they are the No. 1 seed in theleague,” said Texas Southern head coach Claude Cummings. “I’ve never seen sucha high level of intensity before.”
Alcorn Stateshot 26-of-63 from the field. Senior forward Tnonealyer Powers scored 16points, along with center Candace Roberts 10, to help add to the Lady Braves 72points.
“We put alot of pressure on TSU. We fought hard and went out there to get a win,” saidAlcorn head coach Shirley Walker. “I push my players to pass the limit, becauseI know what they are capable of doing. I look forward to the rest of thetournament.”
