Beginningthe week of Feb. 28- March 4, the brothers of Upsilon Phi Upsilon honored fiveuniversity faculty and staff members by giving them “A Unique Educators Award.”
One of therecipients was Terral Jackson, director of the Smith-Brown Memorial StudentUnion and he received his award on Wednesday.
“It wasquite a surprise, anytime I get an award or an appreciation or anything fromstudents it’s not a good thing it’s a great thing,” Jackson said.
Upsilon PhiUpsilon gave honor to people that were helping the university.
“When wehad the nomination, we wanted to present an award to the teachers and facultymembers that are doing things,” said Clifford Nichols, a junior musicperformance major from Natchitoches. “We also wanted to honor the individualsthat the students can relate to and the ones that have a close relationshipwith the student body.”
Theselection process of the nominees came from within the organization.
Theycollectively began with 22 nominees and there after it was narrowed downaccording to whom they wanted to present the award to and why the membersthought these individuals should receive, “A Unique Educators Award.”
“We’reshowing the teachers that we care about what they’re doing for us because moststudents don’t show that kind of thing,” said Jamaul Jackson, a sophomorecomputer science major from Baton Rouge. “We’re making a great impact byshowing the recipients what they’re doing.”
The awardswere accompanied by two tickets to eat at Alexander’s.
”This is our first time doing this andwe want to make it annually so that later on in the future we could have abanquet or something bigger than this and hopefully the past recipients wouldhelp us out to make this a bigger event,” Nichols said.
The otheraward winners are Robbia Kelly, an assistant professor of English, CharlesLloyd Jr., assistant professor of visual and performing arts, Dr. LauritaGuillory, professor and director of reading, and Fitzgerald Spencer, aprofessor in the Biology department.
Upsilon PhiUpsilon is also participating in other activities, such as the American HeartAssociation walk, the tobacco free art contest with the Baton Rouge publicschools and they are also volunteering with Saint Vincent DePaul by feeding thehomeless.
