Southern University”s nutritiondepartment has opened a new cafŽ aimed at providing nutritional alternativesfor students to enjoy healthy meals.
On March 4, CafŽ Lacumba wasintroduced to SU students. The cafŽ is named after Southern”s legendary Jaguar,Lacumba. Its menu is comprised of sandwiches, soups and smoothies.
‘I believe that the cafŽ will bevery beneficial to the university. The new cafŽ menu is very delicious andnutritional. The cafŽ is good for the students eating there and for thestudents who are working on making it (the cafŽ) possible for the university,’said Bernestine McGee, nutrition department personnel that started thecafŽ.
CafŽ Lacumba is open everyFriday for students from 11a.m. to 2p.m. This cafŽ has a healthy menu as wellas a variety of smoothies to choose from. Students seem to appreciate the ideaof a new cafŽ that offers healthy alternatives.
William Henry, sophomorebusiness marketing major from Shreveport appreciates the idea of having anotherplace to dine on campus.
‘I am glad I have another choiceto eat at, here on campus,’ Henry said.
The CafŽ Lacumba is located inThrift hall room 161.
The United States Department ofAgriculture helped to make the cafŽ possible through a grant. It is non- profitand serves as an internship based program, while allowing students to not onlygain experience but also give back to the SU community.
Proceeds go toward the fundingof the cafŽ”s operational expenses. Nutrition majors seem to delight in the purpose of the new cafŽ as well.
‘The cafŽ will allow me to earnan internship and it will give me the experience I need with foods.’ saidShemeka Hayes, a freshman nutrition major from Shreveport.
CafŽ Lacumba is only open onFridays as it servers as part of a class given only on that day. It seats 50people.
‘I always think about my cafŽback home, and now there is one on campus, ‘said Geri Guillory, a freshmancomputer science major from New York.
