Gunshots rang out between the back parking lot of Southern University’s 200 apartment building and outside the west wing in the parking lot of SU’s 100 apartment building around 10 PM late Wednesday night.
According to sources, a student on probation, who had been banned from S.V. Totty Hall dormitory, was confronted by campus police after his maroon Jeep was spotted in the area. Allegedly, the confrontation turned violent when the student slammed into a police cruiser then opened fire at campus police on the scene. During his attempt to get away, one officer fired back and hit the suspect in the arm through the driver side window.
According to State Police, the suspect was later chased down on Interstate -10 where he was apprehended in West Baton Rouge Parish and eventually brought into custody. No charges have been filed. The suspect’s wound is considered non-life threatening and the suspect’s name has not yet been released.
Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management Dr. Brandon K. Dumas, Dean of Students Marcus Coleman, Executive Director for Student Services and Residential Life Director Tracie Abraham and Associate Dean of Students Ryan Tucker were on the scene, however, refused to give a statement and referred us to Southern University Police.
This incident is under further investigation. We continue to follow this story and will provide updates as they are received.
