UPDATE:
Police officials have identified the person found yesterday in the Mississippi River near The Bluff as 51-year-old, Yvette Nettles.
Nettles was reported missing on Jan. 27, according to a BRPD press release and was suffering from mental illness.
The body was found by a group of LSU students at Scott’s Bluff on the Mississippi River near Southern University and A&M College around 2:45 pm Tuesday, February 6.
The students were on a field trip at SU as apart of a site analysis class.
LSU student and sophomore architecture major, Mya Prean, from Geismar, LA stated that they were working on a “site drawing” of the river when she, along with several classmates noticed a body around 2 feet away from where they were standing.
“At first we thought it was a prank and then we went to get our professor and he called the police,” Prean stated.
LSU Architecture Professor, William Doran, stated that he initially called 911 after students noticed the body lying face down in the river. Doran was then connected to the SU police department, who arrived on the scene within 10 minutes.
Southern University issued a statement around 5 pm, stating “This is an unfortunate incident, and our thoughts and prayers are with the loved ones of the victim. No identification has been made.”
SU Senior Biology major, Denita Washington, shared that she was saddened to hear of the discovery of the body.
“I thought how did the body end up on our campus? I was shocked,” Washington said.
Around 4:30 pm, a coroner’s office arrived on the scene to remove the body. Six officials helped to remove the victim from the water near the small pond of water that separated from the main body of water.
