On a double-header weekend, the Lady Jaguar soccer team faced off against cross-state rivals the Grambling State Tigers. Coming off a bad weekend, the Jaguars looked to respond this weekend against Arkansas-Pine Bluff Friday and Grambling State Sunday.
The Jaguars split the weekend with a 2-1 win over the Golden Lions but followed it up by getting slaughtered by the Tigers, 6-0, in a complete shut-out. In a hard matchup on the road, the Jaguars couldn’t seem to get anything going on offense while their defense was overwhelmed by the Tigers, who outshot them by a staggering, 20-3 margin, and with nine saves, goalie, Chioma Eriken, was unable to do more to help the Jaguars win.
An update for the conference sees the Jaguars in the bottom half of the SWAC with a 1-3 conference record in 6th behind Jackson State and Texas Southern who both sit at 1-2-1. The Jaguars needed to beat Grambling to ensure a top seed for the conference tournament, but with Sunday’s loss, the Jaguars look destined to face one of the higher seeds come November.
Currently, the conference leaders are Prairie View, Grambling, Alabama State, and Alabama A&M from first to fourth with the two Alabama schools sharing a third-place seeding at 3-1 apiece. Prairie View is sitting pretty with a perfect conference record of 4-0 while Grambling also remains undefeated at 2-0. The real test for Grambling starts this weekend though as they take on both TSU and PV.
The Lady Jaguars face another doubleheader this weekend, with two games at home. Friday, October 8 at 6 PM, sees the Jaguars take on Mississippi Valley State while Sunday, October 10 at 1 PM, is Alcorn State University. These next two games represent two good opportunities for Southern as Mississippi Valley and Alcorn State share last place with Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Two wins put the Jaguars in a much more secure position going into the final three games of the season.
Hopefully, the Jaguars can respond and shake back. An easy week comparatively, the Jaguars should look to continue to build on the things that have worked while readjusting their offense. The defense has been good this season, despite what this recent game may tell, but the Jaguars can’t expect to stop everything with no offense. Figuring out how to win the time of possession game and get the ball in the net needs to be priority one.
The Grambling, Southern soccer game drew just over 100 fans, so let’s get out and support our Lady Jaguars this weekend as they look to bounce back strong.
