Four players scored in double figures as the Southern University women’s basketball team knocked off Texas Southern 61-53 Saturday at the F.G. Clark Activity Center, clinching the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title outright.
The Jaguars (20-8, 13-4), who clinched a share of the regular season title with Thursday’s win over Prairie View A&M, ends the season undefeated at the Minidome and will enter next week’s SWAC Tournament in Shreveport with the No. 1 seed.
The win over TSU (12-17, 9-9) put the finishing touches on SU’s first regular season title since the 2005-06 season, along with the third 20-plus win season during coach Sandy Pugh’s tenure as head coach (25-6 in 2001-02, 20-11 in 2005-06). SU won the SWAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in those seasons.
A nip-and-tuck affair early, Southern began pulling away late in the first half to lead 33-26 at halftime. The Jaguars managed to take that lead without going to the free throw line the entire first half.
Texas Southern chipped away at the lead midway through the second half, but a pair of threes by Hannah Kador and Ashley Augerson helped put the game out of reach of the Tigers.
Southern, one of Division I’s stingiest defensive units, forced 22 TSU turnovers that the Jaguars turned into 21 points.
Kador led SU with 15 points, followed by Jamie Floyd with 14, tiffany Foster with 12 and Augerson with 11.
Texas Southern also had four players scoring in double figures. Jasmine Cannon led with 16 points while Trikeyia East scored 11 and Gabrielle Rosigi and Inisha Daughtry each scored 10.
