In memory of this honorable brother whom imparted his knowledge to the students of southern university Dr. Allen. He expanded our minds and us our history with his on special brand of humor. He tried to remind us if we didn’t know our past how would we know ourselves and how could we impact the future. I write this in remembrance of this brother who was so proud of his blackness and history and wanted us to be just as proud. This brother who lived in awe of W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther king, and Malcom x. and tried to teach us to be in awe. This brother who knew his past and served as a modern-day griot. His true legacy is his family, but he taught us will be is legacy at southern university. How will us as the southern university family remember him? This man who taught us about our history all the way from the Nile delta to the door of no return all the way across the Atlantic Ocean to the struggle of these united states and finally some sort of freedom. He reminded us of the brown and smith shootings that happened on this very campus. He always remembered the many sacrifices that paved the way for him to be Dr. Allen not just Mr. Allen. We must remember we are part of his legacy. The trips he took to Africa to show a younger generation the struggle we came from and how possibly we could ever live up to that sacrifice and strength of our ancestors. So as his former students, let’s remember we are part of this dear brothers legacy. And ask ourselves how can we truly appreciate and remember him. As a history, I find it my duty to do so and I say thank you Dr. Allen for the knowledge you imparted on to me and the spark you inspired in me to learn the history of our people. As you have gone into that long good night your knowledge will always be part of me and others. We are many who bear the burden of keeping your memory alive at southern university. You were a southern warrior just like many who have gone before you and whose names are incrusted on our buildings. I would like the privilege of saying thank you Dr. Allen for all those mornings of African American history and history of the civil rights movements and all the other classes you taught. We as students never think of the day we might not see the people who try to teach us better every day this should be an eye opener. We S.U. are a family and to all the professors of southern university we must do better. In remembrance of this dear brother Dr. Allen.
Thank you
And precious lord lead him home.
