The Chancellor’s Lecture Series will present award-winning director, producer, writer and actor Spike Lee at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30 in the F.G. Clark Activity Center.
The event is free and open to the public.
Lee is the second speaker in the series, and is widely known for his ingenious foray in black college life in “School Daze,” which took a closer look at both the academic and extracurricular pulls and drawbacks facing Historically Black Colleges and Universities of the time.
No stranger when it comes to HBCUs, the Morehouse College graduate began his film career when he directed “Last Hustle in Brooklyn,” and has continued to act and direct in his films, gaining industry respect and attention after “Do the Right Thing” and “He Got Game” were nominated for Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, respectively.
He directed, wrote, produced and starred in his first independent film, “She’s Gotta Have It,” on a $175,000 budget and shot the film in 12 days after receiving failed funding promises from a producer. The film went on to gross over $7 million at the box office.
Following Hurricane Katrina, Lee garnered critical acclaim with his four-hour made-for television documentary, “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts.” In addition to his film credits, Lee has also directed and appeared in several music videos and nationally televised commercials, most famously alongside Michael Jordan.
