PITTSBURGH — Southern wide receiver Juamorris Stewart’s monster 2008 season earned him national recognition as he was named to Sheridan Broadcasting’s first-team HBCU All-American Team last Monday.
Stewart, a former Istrouma standout, was the only unanimous selection to the 2008 All-SWAC team after finishing the season with 76 catches for 1,385 yards and 12 scores. Those totals are the best single-season numbers since Michael Hayes’ record-setting 2000 season.
Stewart became the fourth SU receiver to eclipse the 800-yard mark since 2000, joining Devin Lewis (1,052 in 2001), Hayes (873 yards in 2002), Chris Davis (897 yards in 2003) and Alfred Ard (863 yards in 2003). He also became Southern’s second 1,000-yard receiver since 2000, with Lewis’ 2001 campaign being the other one.
Stewart also earned All-Louisiana collegiate honors by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
The 2008 SBN Sports Black College All-American Team and 2008 SBN/Jake Gaither Black College National Champion Grambling will be honored at the 35th Annual SBN Sports Black College All-American Awards dinner on Saturday, Feb. 14 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh.
