MOBILE, Ala.— Bryant Lee threw four touchdowns and ran for another, propelling Southern University to a 34-24 win over Alabama State on Saturday.
Lee was 29-for-39 with 384 yards and an interception for the Jaguars (6-3, 3-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference). He also rushed for 44 yards. Lee became the school’s all-time passing leader during the game.
Juamorris Stewart caught seven balls for 131 yards and a score. Stewart’s 22-yard catch-and-run on the Jaguars’ third offensive series of the game helped Lee surpass Eric Randall as Southern’s all-time leading passer. Lee needed 17 yards to surpass Randall’s career mark of 7,286 yards from 1992-95.
Lee now has 7,654 yards with two games left in his playing career – the Bayou Classic against Grambling State Nov. 28 and a season-ending road game Dec. 5 at Texas Southern. Lee broke Randall’s career touchdown mark earlier this season.
Trailing 10-7 after the first quarter, Lee connected with Stewart on a 51-yard score for a 14-10 lead. He then threw a 5-yard TD pass to Warren Matthews to put Southern up 20-13 at halftime.
In the third, Lee’s 12-yard touchdown run and 33-yard TD pass to Gary Hollimon put the Jaguars ahead 34-16.
Andrew Lyons kicked field goals of 28 and 21 yards for the Hornets (4-6, 1-6).
