Southern softball coach Nancy Marshall has always relied on defense to win games.
Tuesday’s home opener against Nicholls State was no exception as the Jaguars lost, 7-1, in seven innings.
“We did not play strong, tight defense therefore the game got out of hand,” Marshall said.
SU was held scoreless through six innings, but later drove in a run off the bat of Carolina Myers, who scored Aruba Nicholas.
Brittany Hymes managed to get on base hitting 2-3 in the contest but SU had a tough time getting things going on offense, failing to score runs in the bottom half of the sixth leaving runners in scoring positions.
Unfortunately, SU (5-6) is without first-team All-SWAC member Jasmone Williams, who watched the game from the stands as recovers from a shoulder injury.
