Football Recruiting Bash set for Wednesday
Southern University football fans are invited to join the SU football
coaching staff, athletics department personnel and the “Jaguar Nation” for its annual National Football Signing Day Recruitment Bash Wednesday.
The event will be held at that Smith-Brown Memorial Union’s Cotillion Ballroom from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
The bash will give fans an opportunity to hear head coach Pete Richardson and members of his coaching staff talk about
the SU football newcomers for the 2009 season.
Information and video highlights on all new signees and transfers will be featured, and door prizes will be given to selected attendees.
Tickets are $15 per person and include admission to the event and a buffet-
style dinner.
SU women rally past Alcorn
LORMAN, Miss.—Southern’s women’s basketball team posted their third-straight win pulling away from Alcorn State 65-59 on Saturday.
SU (10-7, 7-2 SWAC) posted a night of season highs as the Jaguars got 10 rebounds from Ashley Augerson for her season and career high.
Sabrina Scott scored 16 points for her season high while Deidra Jackson added 13. Tiffany Foster scored a season high 12 points after 22 minutes of action.
It was the third-straight contest where SU came back from a halftime deficit to pull out a conference victory. The rebounding advantage was the key and it went Southern’s way as they out did the Lady Braves 42-28. The second swing of conference play begins Saturday as Grambling State visits. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
SU men win in overtime
LORMAN, Miss.—Earnest Jones scor-ed five of his 17 points in overtime and Southern defeated Alcorn State 86-83 on Saturday night.
Jones had one of two Jaguars’ offensive rebounds in the overtime period. Southern (4-17, 4-5 SWAC) scored five second-chance points in the extra period.
The Jaguars had 13 second-chance points in the game and outrebounded Alcorn State 41-27. Steffon Wiley and Douglas Scott had 10 rebounds each for the Jaguars. Chris Davis scored 19 points for Southern, Wiley added 15 and Barry Honore’ scored 13.
Wiley hit two free throws with eight seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
The Jags return home Saturday to entertain Grambling State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
