There is little competition to the more seasoned Jaguars as both the men’s and women’s track & field teams prepare to due battle in Saturday’s Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track & Field Meet.
Action begins at 9 a.m. Saturday at LSU’s Carl Maddox Field House.
Events will last well into the afternoon and continue on Sunday at 8 a.m.
“Both our men and women’s teams return experienced runners who rank among the best in the conference, and our freshman runners will have immediate impact this season as well,” said coach Greg Thompson.
In 2002, SU captured a men’s team title adding to the collection of six titles since the 1991 track and field season.
Senior sprinter Leon Citizen leads the charge as team captain, holding on the top spot in the men’s 400- and 200-meter dashes. Citizen, who also anchors the 4×100-meter relay and runs with 4×400-meter relay team, sees his only competition of the year as his fellow teammates.
“As team captain, I set examples running hard in practice and influencing underclassmen to perform to the best of their abilities,” said Citizen.
“Everybody must score in respected events in order to be successful as a team.”
SU returns one of the nation’s best jumpers in Jason House. House is nationally ranked as one of the best to compete in the high jump.
“Our biggest competition is ourselves, we can win a SWAC championship if we perform the way we are expected to,” said House.
House also competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials last summer.
The women’s team returns a young talented group with freshmen that will have big shoes to fill next season.
SU’s women head into Saturday’s competition owning the fastest 4×100 time in the SWAC this season.
“It’s a rebuilding stage for the women but we have a group of ladies who look to improve this season,” said Thompson.
Senior Earledreka White returns this season seeking first place this time around finishing SWAC runner-up in the women’s triple jump last season. Also, senior distance runner Precious Collins returns for her final season.
