The Southern University women’s basketball team finds itself jockeying for position in the upcoming Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament after splitting a pair last weekend.
Southern will entertain Alcorn State Saturday at 2 p.m. at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in their final home game of the season. The Jags then travel to Texas Southern next Thursday before ending the regular season at Prairie View.
The Jaguars lost their 10th game this season falling to Alabama State 47-51 on Saturday. However, SU returned to its winning ways, defeating Alabama A&M 55-37 on Monday, securing a season sweep of AAMU.
The split gives SU (13-10, 10-5) a one-win lead over Alabama State (12-13, 9-5) with three games left in the Jags’ regular season.
SU was tied with ASU late in the second half when Alabama State took the lead for good on a basket with 6:45 left to play. The score sparked a 10-2 run by the Lady Hornets as they took a 44-36 lead with 3:14 on the clock. The lead got no smaller than four points in the final minutes as ASU took the win and soul possession of second place in the conference.
SU got a season-high 22 points from senior Deidra Jackson. Sophomore Jamie Floyd and junior Kimberly Griffin each totaled seven boards.
In Monday’s victory Jamie Floyd scored a season high 15 points while Deidra Jackson added 11. Junior Ashley Augerson recorded her second game of the year with 10 rebounds while Kimberly Griffin posted her second game with multiple boards and a season high 13 rebounds .
SU set the tone in the first 20 minutes, leading 32-13 at halftime. SU shot 40 percent (13-of-32) in the first half and limited Alabama A&M to 23 percent shooting (5-of-22).
