Southern University will observe Black History Month on the Baton Rouge campus with a number of activities that include speakers, a quiz bowl and music.
Southern’s Smith-Brown Memorial Union and the Division of Student Affairs are using the theme, “Honoring our African American heritage” to mark the observance.
Events kick off with a lecture on “African American Healthy Living” by former Philip Morris USA research scientist, Dr. Victor DeNoble, today at 11 a.m. in the J. K. Haynes School of Nursing Auditorium. DeNoble has testified before Congress, the Food and Drug Administration and former Vice President Al Gore’s Tobacco Settlement Committee about the negative practices of the tobacco industry.
There will be a Black History Quiz Bowl at 6 p.m., Thursday in the Cotillion Ballroom of the Smith-Brown Memorial Union. The competition will consist of five teams of four students from various student organizations. The teams will be quizzed on questions highlighting the achievements and contributions of blacks. Those attending the event are asked to bring a canned food item to be donated to the Baton Rouge Food Bank.
A Jazz Brunch featuring the Southern University Jazz Ensemble will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11 in the Mama Jag Food Court of the union.
The play, “Shakin’ the Mess out of Misery,” will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 11 and will run until Saturday, Feb. 14 in Southern’s Frank Hayden Theater. All productions will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $3 for students with a valid I.D., $5 for the general public and $1 for senior citizens.
Students from surrounding high schools have been asked to draw a poster of famous blacks.The posters will be displayed in the lobby of the union on Thursday, Feb. 12. Southern students will vote on the best poster and the first-, second- and third-place winners will be invited to the campus to receive an award
Hip-Hop professor Jon Yasin will speak at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 25, in the Cotillion Ballroom. This event is part of the Chancellor’s Lecture Series for Black History Month.
Festivities will conclude with an African American/Cultural Fashion Show at 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 27, in the Cotillion Ballroom. Those attending are asked to bring a canned food item.
