Southern’s softball was picked to repeat as Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Western Division champions by the league’s coaches and sports information departments.
The Blue and Gold also had four players named to the preseason first-team.
“It’s an honor that we have been picked first,” said head coach Nancy
Marshall who is 12 victories away from her 300th win. “Our biggest goal is the SWAC championship and advancing to the NCAA. Winning the SWAC is what we will concentrate on.”
Sophomore pitcher Lanaya Jenkins, juniors Brittany Hymes and Jasmone Williams and sophomore outfielder Victoria Stewart were the Lady Jaguars named to the first-team all-conference squad. This is Williams’s third collegiate honor as she was named to the 2008 first-team and 2008 All-Louisiana second team. Stewart was also named second-team All-Louisiana. This is Hymes’ and Jenkins’ first preseason honor.
“All the players that were named deserve to be there,” Marshall stated. They are strong willed and strong ball players. I’m excited for them.”
