SU softball falls to Nicholls
The Lady Jaguars softball team fell 6-2 to the Lady Colonels of Nicholls State University Wednesday.
Southern (12-14, 8-3 SWAC) held a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom half of the third, when Nicholls put three runs on the scoreboard to go ahead 4-2. The Lady Colonels added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and went on to win their fifth straight contest.
Leading the Jags at the plate was Audrey Phillips after posting a 3-for-4 performance with a run. Chastoni Jones, Victoria Stewart, Kasha Tauriac and Marquisha Greggs each accounted for a hit as the Blue and Gold posted seven total hits.
Southern will return to conference action this weekend when they travel to Prairie View, Texas, to take on the Lady Panthers. The three-game set will start today at 2 p.m. Games two and three will start Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
SU golfers capture first tourney title
MONROE—The Southern men’s golf team captured their first tournament title of the season in the Memorial Classic Golf Tournament hosted by Grambling State at Chennault Park in Monroe.
The Jaguars finished the first day with a team total 332 strokes and tied for second place. The second day of the tourney saw Edgar Evans shoot an 80 and Joshua Martin finish the day with 79 strokes on their scorecard to lead SU to their first classic title.
SU finished the classic as follows; Suhail Valley shot 84 and 85 and finished with 169 total strokes. Nixon shot an 87 and 79 for a 166 total. Martin 81 and 79 tied for a team leading 160 strokes. Evans’ 80 and 80 was the other 160 score to tie for team leader. Bobby Bell ended the two-day event with an 88 and an 81 for 169 strokes.
SU women’s tennis finish roundup perfect
The 2009 SWAC West Tennis Roundup completed action Saturday with the Southern women and Univ. Arkansas-Pine Bluff men emerging with perfect records.
SU’s women’s team added another win on Saturday as they defeated Prairie View A&M. The victory made the Jaguars 3-0 for the weekend and 7-0 overall in conference play. Grambling also posted a victory on Saturday. The Lady Tigers overcame Arkansas-Pine Bluff, going 2-1 in the roundup. Prairie View and UAPB both suffered losses on the final day of competition. The Lady Panthers go home with a 1-2 west roundup record, while the Golden Lions depart with a 0-3 slate.
In men’s action, UAPB defeated Grambling in an intense 4-3 match to remain perfect in conference play. The Golden Lions went 3-0 in the west roundup and now stand as the only undefeated conference team at 7-0.
The Southern men saw its first win of the roundup on Saturday. They beat Prairie View and leave the roundup with a 1-2 record. With their narrow loss to UAPB, the Grambling Tigers finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.
