Still clicking on all cylinders, Southern found a way to win—capturing two of three games in a weekend of baseball against Prairie View A&M—while helping promote a local non-profit organization.
During Saturday’s double-header, SU head coach Roger Cador expressed concern about Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
“We’re getting a good response from the community,” said Cador, “getting individuals involved in helping others.”
CASA appoints placement of children who have been abused into permanent, safe and stable homes.
As far as baseball, Cador had no concerns about his team’s performance in game one as the Jags (17-8, 13-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference) out-slugged the Panthers en route to a 12-5 win. SU’s Brad McDavid’s three-run homerun led to 10-straight runs over the first four innings of the game.
“The guys are playing in a good grove right now,” Cador said. “They’re not trying to do too much at once.”
After a thrilling opener, SU struggled to get things going at the plate, ending their nine-game win streak losing 12-1 in game two.
PV’s pitching struck out five batters while holding SU to three hits.
Heading into Sunday’s match-up SU looked to finish off the Panthers after a disappointing game two. SU’s hot hitting streak dispirited the PV’s pitching as the Jags scored six runs over the first four innings and cruised to a 11-4 win taking the series.
“We didn’t need to make any changes,” said Cador. “None were needed.”
Victor Franklin led the team with five hits, three runs and four RBI’s this weekend.
The Jags travel to Lafayette Wednesday to collide with UL-Lafayette in a 6 p.m. matchup. Conference play resumes this weekend with a home-and-home series against Jackson State. The two teams will play in Jackson, Miss., Saturday before playing at Lee-Hines Sunday.
