Southern split its non-conference weekend series with Jackson State, avenging Saturday’s 4-1 loss with a 12-2 win on Sunday.
Marquise Zachery picked up the win for the Tigers, pitching a complete game while giving up only one run on three hits. Zachery also struck out eight batters. In six innings of work Southern ‘s James Spears gave up four runs on nine hits.
Fred Atkins led JSU’s offensive efforts, recording three hits and one home run. Chad Hall finished with two hits, a run and an RBI. Toddrick Stevenson led the Jaguars with two hits and one run scored.
SU tied the game at 1-1 with a score in the third, before JSU added two runs in the fourth and another insurance run in the fifth inning when Marvin McWhorter hit a home run.
On Sunday, Southern scored 12 unanswered runs to take a 12-2 win.
After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning SU scored at least one run in six of their final seven at bats. A four-run third inning and three-run fourth broke the game open for the Jaguars.
Frazier Hall and Juan Mujica each had three hits, and Victor Franklin hit his conference-leading 10th home run of the season.
SU also got a complete game out of Brian Foster, who allowed nine hits but only yielded two runs, while striking out three.
