Southern’s athletic department has been in a giving mood as of late, helping promote the local branch of the non-profit group CASA—Court Appointed Special Advocates—register volunteers at a recent baseball game, while its baseball team has issued opponents losses in 16 of its last 19 games.
Now, during student athlete week, SU is ready to give again with a week full of events that benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
“We wanted to do something to help, so we decided to try to raise money to send to St. Jude’s Hospital from the student athletes,” said Sheila Minor.
Activities began yesterday with a dance exclusive to student athletes only. Today, at SU’s 3 p.m. baseball game against Alcorn State, there will be an ice cream social—where players will be giving away ice cream—that’s open to everyone. Wednesday, student athletes will visit Southern University Laboratory school and read to head start students. Friday, there will be an athletic staff vs. student athlete’s basketball game at 6:30 p.m. in Seymour Gym. Then, Saturday at 8 a.m., the week will conclude with the school’s first annual “Walk for a Purpose.”
All events are free and the public is encouraged to participate. Donations are welcomed at all events.
Saturday’s walk will begin at Lee Hines Baseball Field, travel through the parking lot of the Felton G. Clark Activity Center and onto the Jesse N. Stone Extension. The route will turn right onto Helen M. Barron Avenue around the campus dormitories, travel north back to Jesse N. Stone, make a left onto Roosevelt Steptoe Avenue in front of the Southern University Law Center, cross in front the Smith-Brown Memorial Union, continue to Jesse N. Stone Ave., around Mumford Stadium, back across the parking lot of the Activity Center and end at Lee Hines Field.
The walk is estimated at three miles.
“We’re not asking for anything, and there is no charge to walk,” Minor said. “Donations, however, are appreciated.”
This event is sponsored by the Southern University Student Athlete Advisory Committee. For more information, or to sign up, contact Minor at 225.771.2601.
